History Stretching from the Taurus Mountains to Your Home: Döşemealtı Carpet Collection

It holds a very special place on Türkiye's carpet map.Döşemealtı CarpetsWoven for centuries by Yörük women in the Döşemealtı district of Antalya, these carpets are a living legend. More than just a floor covering, each stitch of these rugs holds a story, a prayer, or a wish; they are among the finest examples of Turkish handicrafts. Protected by geographical indication registration, these works are highly prized by those who appreciate authentic decoration and collectors.

Characteristic Features of Döşemealtı Carpet

To tell if a carpet is from Döşemealtı, simply look at its texture and colors.

  • Reverse Turkish Knot:These carpets are woven using the "Gordes" (Turkish Knot) technique, considered the strongest knotting technique in the world. However, unique to Döşemealtı, the loops are reversed, ensuring that the pattern on the back of the carpet is just as clear as on the front.
  • 100% Wool and Natural Dyes:Its raw material is entirely sheep's wool. Its colors are derived from plants in nature (root dyes). Thanks to this, the colors do not fade over time; on the contrary, they mature and acquire a "pastel" beauty.
  • Color Palette:The background color is usually flag red (burgundy) or navy blue. Green, white, and black are frequently used in the patterns.

The Language of Halelli and Collective Patterns

Döşemealtı carpets speak through their motifs.

  • Halelli Motif:It is its most famous design. It is a geometric pattern believed to protect against the evil eye.
  • Toplu, Kocasulu and Akrepli:Other iconic motifs symbolize the Yoruk people's struggle with nature, strength, and abundance. The scorpion motif reflects their desire for protection from poisonous animals in their nomadic lifestyle.

Ethnic Touches in Modern Homes

Although a traditional product, Döşemealtı rugs create a wonderful contrast in modern decor. In a living room furnished with minimalist furniture, a Döşemealtı rug placed on the floor adds soul, warmth, and artistic depth to the space.
